This lesson explores the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

My kids really enjoyed this lesson overall and it was a great opportunity to talk about values, injustice, etc. I really like that the end of the project is about empowering kids to explore how they want to, and can, impact the world around them. Because my kids are on the younger side, we did more verbal communication than actually writing a whole paper and focused more on the speech. This lesson is great really for any elementary or middle school aged kids and took us about two hours.

This lesson combines research and timelines to help children understand the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

The timeline focus of this lesson is wonderful and will really aid with understanding MLK, Jr's life. Although the younger age suggested is 3rd for the lesson, my 6 yo would do fine, so it's perfect choice for family-style learning (also ages 10, 11). You could also scale the timeline in size from very small pictures and entries to larger ones to make a lengthy timeline. In years past, we created lapbooks to learn more about MLK, Jr. but given how much my students like timelines, this will be a great choice for us for 2022.

This lesson studies the bravery and boldness of Ruby Bridges, the first African American girl to attend an all-white school. In this lesson, children will create a flip book, complete a guided drawing, and compare and contrast historic and present day conditions through discussion.

This is a great, easy to follow lesson. It’s a mostly paper and pencil kind of lesson, but its chock full of it and there’s no real preparation for it other than some printing. While this is a history lesson, I really appreciate that the focus of many of the leading questions is about building empathy and finding ways to connect with Ruby’s story. The lesson seems best for elementary aged students and takes several hours.
